A Gazhal

Jo mili, auron ko de dhi wo savaari,

Zindagi hamne kuchh aise hi guzaari.

Munh bana au' car ka sheesha chadhaa jab,

muskuraa kar chal diya thaa ik bhikhaari.

ham samajhte hi rahe ki hum jiye the,

ilm aakhir men hua, ik thaa madaari.

raat se bhukhe rahe bachche ne subah,

dekha to degon men namkeen hui nahaari.

ab shab-e-aaram hoti hi nahin hai,

raat ko to baat hoti thi hamaari!

nahaari - morning breakfast

इक ग़ज़ल

जो मिली, औरों को दे दी वो सवारी,
ज़िन्दगी हमने कुछ ऐसे ही गुज़ारी।

मुँह बना औ' कार का शीशा चढ़ा जब,
मुस्कुरा कर चल दिया था इक भिखारी।

हम समझते ही रहे कि हम जिये थे,
इल्म आख़िर में हुआ, इक था मदारी।

रात से भूखे रहे बच्चेने सुबह
देखा तो देगों में नमकीं हुई नहारी।

अब शब-ए-आराम होती ही नहीं है,
रात को तो बात होती थी हमारी!

नहारी = वह थोड़ा सा खाना जिससे सुबह का फ़ाक़ा तोड़ते हैं, नाशता।



English Translation

Whatever mean of commute I got, I passed it to others,
This way I have spend my whole life. 

Someone made face and closed the car window.
and a beggar smiled towards that person and left. 

We kept guessing that we were living.
In the end we got to know that there was a puppeteer.

A kid - hungry since last night - looked at them, 
and the food in those vessels got salty. 

Now the night of tranquillity never comes for me.
We used to talk at night only!
